My buddy who lives on the west coast, and has thus been away from things for a while just posted this to facebook "Mason is so bad its amazing. WTF happened to this program"

My other buddy posted "They hired a coach whose success hinges on his team being more athletic than the other team. If you look at Mason, they've got guys who can run, jump and dunk but their assist numbers are ridiculously low (indicator of poor offensive scheme) and they shoot a low percentage, which is key as a mid major. Further, Hewitt has found a way to not recruit a single point guard who can handle vcu's pressure which means everyone presses GMU into submission. Now, they've got a lame duck coach whos making 750k/year - more than The Shiny Midget and Tony Bennett - and a president who won't fire him to not coach. Bill Courtney, who hasn't done anything at Cornell, seems to be up next but it really sucks seeing Coach L beat the (expletive) out (dude we know) and (another dude we know) Duke team, while Mason is getting the (expletive) kicked out of them nightly."

Such a bummer. (also, there's like a 75% chance my buddy posts to this board as gmujim)

Three to six more wins would take Mason to 9-12 wins for the year. They already have seen interest dwindle in many ways (declined season tickets, TV games), etc. Is that really enough to keep a coach who has had his team declining in wins every year? Keep in mind, that would still most likely be a decline or equal (11 division 1 wins, at Max).

There are several bonuses that have been allocated that Hewitt hasn't obtained. If you add those up you get several hundred thousand dollars off the bat. Plus I'm sure they could pay the buyout over years, and various other ways are possible. If they put those bonuses in his contract, the money had to be available.

I find it hard pressed to believe that a new AD who "wants to win" and "knows when to make a change" (not my words), is going to put up with additional years with someone he didn't hire. Especially one who "expected improvement in a down league" this year. There is too much risk to give a guy a 5th year without having any time beyond that.

How do we know Cabrera and the BOV actually care about Mason basketball? They may be fine with this mess. If Cabrera and the BOV don't sign off on paying the buyout we're stuck with Hewitt regardless of what Edwards wants.

I think the Merten era where the administration actually cared about sports was an aberration.

2) has spoken about importance of Mens Basketball program
3) Hired an aggressive fundraising AD who wants to win and wants change

Pretty sure if Edwards presents a business plan to Cabrera, it'll be signed off. Plus see my other post about what Edwards wants.
