"SCOTT CHERRY – ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH

Scott Cherry has been promoted to the position of Associate Head Coach. He will continue to contribute to the Lipscomb University basketball program in his new role, building on his achievements and experiences from last season.

Scott Cherry joins the ranks of Associate Head Coach after serving as an Assistant Coach at Lipscomb University. During the 2025-2026 season, Cherry played a pivotal role in the team's success. Under his guidance, players such as Grant Asman and Mateo Esmeraldo achieved significant individual honors, with Asman earning a place on the First Team All-ASUN and Esmeraldo on the Third Team All-ASUN. The team also celebrated a strong season with 19 wins and secured a first-round bye in the 2026 ASUN Tournament.

Carroll expressed enthusiastic support for Cherry's promotion: 'I am excited to announce the promotion of Scott Cherry to Associate Head Coach. From his very first day with us, Scott's leadership, basketball expertise, and unwavering commitment to our student-athletes have made a profound impact on our program. Having been a head coach himself, Scott brings invaluable experience and perspective that have benefited not only me personally but also our entire staff and team. This promotion is a well-deserved recognition of the positive influence he has had on our program, and I look forward to continuing our work together as we pursue even greater success.'"

"SAN ANTONIO — Paul Westhead had a coaching career like none other.

He won an NBA championship as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in 1980. He won a WNBA championship as coach of the Phoenix Mercury in 2007. And at the college level, his 1989-90 Loyola Marymount team that was led by Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble remains the highest-scoring squad in NCAA Division I history.

Add it up, and that’s achievement. And the National Basketball Coaches Association celebrated his work on Friday, when it announced the 87-year-old Westhead as this year’s recipient of the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award."

Add to this: His record in 108 games George Mason from 1993-97 was 38-70 (.352).

Clearly, he didn't get the award based on his record at Mason. If I'm not mistaken, Mason never won a game in the end-of-season CAA tournaments while he was coach.

But winning an NBA title (and I think a WNBA title with Phoenix) plus his Loyola-Marymount Cinderella story justifiably overrode his time in Fairfax.

Rather impressive list of previous Chuck Daly winners:

Bill Belichik was 36-44 in Cleveland.

Noteworthy careers based on overall success, not individual stops.

That probably makes him the all-time winningest coach in Cleveland though.

Making this sarcastic comment made me curious.

Out of 22 HC's they have had in their history, of the ones that coached at least 1 full season:
*Belichik is 4th in all time wins and 7th in winning percentage as HC
*Only 4 have had winning records

I'm bored so I'll play. Success in coaching at the highest levels depends on the players so it all boils down to the roster that a coach is given. Hell, I could have coached the 80 Lakers, 92-93 Cowboys, or Patriots with Tom Brady to championships. Hey Magic, throw it in to Kareem, if that doesn't work give it to Coop or Haywood. Common sense. Hey Troy, hand it to Emmitt, if that doesn't work throw it to Irvin. Hey Tom, hit the open guy.

What was Belichick's record without Tom Brady? 84-104. He was 4-8 at North Carolina last year. Hardly Hall of Fame numbers.

Westhead was an innovator but also an absolute failure. 183-204 overall as an NBA head coach. Joke. 66-92 as an NCAA women's head coach. 38-70 at Mason and just a .561 winning percentage overall in men's college basketball. Enjoy the honor because it wasn't earned or deserved in my humble opinion.

Yep and what was his record after he left Tom Brady? Answer: A very similar 29-39 for and an unremarkable .426 winning percentage. (Oh', Tom Brady won a Super Bowl without Belichick....just say'n. That's one reason why Belichick remarkably failed to make the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility! People KNOW what he was AND WHAT HE DID!.)

So happy for him how he was able to carve out that career in the Philippines. I was in Malta, of all places, and had a Filipino waiter - I asked him if he knew who Gabe Norwood was and he lit up like I asked him if he knew who Michael Jordan was. Still kicking myself for not reaching out to Gabe and trying to get the kid a message from him.
