There was no three-point shot when John Wooden coached UCLA (1948–1975). He won all 10 of his NCAA championships in an era without a 3-point line or a shot clock.
I think of some of dean smith’s teams…hideous basketball… if that game existed today I would not be a fan

We once had a game nearly that low scoring, with shot clock and 3 pt line! In the conference championship no less.

35-33 Mason over UNCW for 2001 CAA Championship. Erik Herring hit the game winning 3 ptr with nearly 3:30 minutes left in the game.
And the ESPN announcers really gave both teams the shaft saying they couldn’t score instead of realizing that was really outstanding defense from both teams. I was at that game and it was incredible.

Yes...for us older fans who were there.....it was and still is "a game for the ages."

Every trip up the floor was brutal. Multiple empty possessions in a row on both sides. No one was getting ANYTHING. We all kept waiting for that "break" where momentum shifted...but it never came. The defense of both teams was obscene.

It's porn for CTS.

That whole era (2001-2011) the CAA really was a defensive grind (Wilmington, vcu, Mason, ODU, Drexel). Sometimes it was first to 50 wins.

Take it for what it's worth. vcu and Loyola tied at #65. Mason and Richmond at #69. It will change daily and with each addition or subtraction. Hey, it's offseason.

Make or break year for Valentine, they are gonna be big spenders again.

What are our needs at this point? And the priority (high, med, low) for them? Prepping for a Quarterly review and was inspired to ask.

I'd add a backup Center after the sharp shooter.

I've got high hopes for Kanga, but he's struggled with fouls in the past (hopefully that improves this year). Marcus and Adair both profile as a little light to hold their own down low, so a guy who can grind it out (and be 5 extra fouls) and not lower the team's floor seems like a fit for me.

Add Okojie (if that's real, another PG if not), Valentine, and a somewhat cromulent back-up 5, and let's start the season today.

I’m not saying he needs to start. But we absolutely need a guy off the bench that can give you instant offense from range. Especially if we are banking on all these big men to contribute.

You speak of defense, but besides Kanga, who is known for their D? We certainly don’t have a shutdown wing or guard at this point.
Got Efeosa Oliogu-Elabor for defense on the wing and now got Marville to shoot 3's. So guess all the wants are getting filled.

As I continue to evaluate the roster that is being constructed I am growing concerned about a few things. It's early and I trust that the staff knows what it's doing, but I'm going to pump the breaks on my enthusiasm and temper my expectations until the whole roster is filled out. I'm a realist........

1. Our youth - at present we have 11 guys on the roster. 8 of them are freshmen or sophomores. Our 4 transfers will be Sophomores. Experience tends to win over youth. If Fatt Hill is not granted the extra year we will have two seniors in Brayden O'Connor and Malik Presley. No juniors. We still have spots to fill so this may change.

2. The A10 finished the year as the number 7 ranked conference. We have transfers coming from the Big East (5th ranked conference), the Sun Belt (20th ranked), Southern (23rd ranked), and Patriot (27th ranked). 3 of the 4 come from leagues ranked well below the A10. It might mean nothing, but it might also be significant.

3. Our NET was 94 at the end of the year and our KenPom was 100. The new guys come from teams with NET rankings of 84, 191, 293, and 328. Ken Pom rankings were 84, 195, 300, and 323.

Time, as always, will answer my questions and concerns. Go Mason!
