Since it appears that just about every player wants to test the portal, and why not, Mason could very well be left in a very bad position. Not enough money to select A10 quality players. I hate to say this but should Mason consider dropping out of the A10? If you can't afford the right players and be competitive what is the point. CTS will be just like every other head coach. I need more money. The Portal./NIL is doomed for failure.
That’s not happening and Tony has proven he can put together a competitive A-10 team. As much as I’d like Mason to step up its game and start spending like the major university it is, it’s way too early to start predicting doom.

Yeah, I agree. While a few schools have bigger budgets, we're competitive with the rest of the league and have a better coach!

If donations to the AD are tax deductible, then thats where programs are dipping to get players paid. Mason has a problem in that dept.

Wecome aboard

Philosophical question - When the NCAA inevitably splits into the "Pay the Players" and "Scholarships or nothing" groups, which way should Mason go?

I personally am fine with us being in the lower tier as I think we could be a dominant school and compete for championships in every sport. I don't see that ever happening if we try to keep up with the "pay the players" schools in the SEC, ACC, Big 12, Big 10, and even the Big East. Hell, we can't even compete with the money paid by the private schools and vcu in the A10.

If we just offer scholarships, I will continue to make my donations to the school, and attend every game, and root just as hard for them in the conference and post-season tournaments.

OK - fire away at me.

if we drop down our budget will too. A10 has a pretty decent media deal, and the units we get from other teams making and winning games in the tournament help out as well. If we drop down I’d expect our budget to drop 30-40% within a couple years, we couldn’t sustain this type of spending in a lesser league.

Mason and lots of other A-10 members should aspire to operate their programs like High Point, which is all in on basketball. I’m jealous AF.
This is not just the admin too. I can’t stress enough, I have heard from players, former players, and people connected to recruits that a big problem is the students/fans lack of enhancement and excitement for basketball. The environment in EBA is a joke and it’s 100% impacting our ability to recruit and keep top talent. As much as I hate vcu, they truly care about basketball from the top down.

The lack of fan interest is a function of the AD plain and simple. The AD has been a joke at Mason since O’Conner.

I still remember emailing the AD when we made the ncaa I think in ‘99. I asked when they planned to let the general community know the team had made the tournament to generate interest…the answer…we are thinking about just that. Needless to say I NEVER saw anything from the AD. Is this the AD or the admin in general I don’t know, but anyone referring to athletics as a side door has no business running an AD. Think that mentality still permeates the AD and the university.

Ummm…. We’ve had enough money to attract players that were good enough to compete in the A10 the last 2 seasons - what are you saying happened to our NIL budget? Is it less now? Those are rhetorical questions.

Sport31 is the poster child for our delusional fan base. He not only underestimates the value Riley brought to our team but foolishly thinks his replacement is on our current roster. The idea in this NIL environment that any 5-star big man who can play both ends of the court is ever walking through our door is beyond naive. Tony hit the mid-major lottery getting Riley for one year.

I'm never going to defend Allenspach's defensive liabilities or effort, but what isn't disputable is that he was the most gifted offensive big man we have had in over a dozen years who wasn't named Haynes or Odurro. Opposing teams game-planned on how to contain him, because his unique ability to score at will in the post and knock down threes is very rare — "Top 10 player in the league" rare!

I'm a proud member of the Emmanuel Kanga Fan Club, but it's unfair to ask that kid to fill Riley's shoes on offense. His current shooting range is three feet from the basket, and many of his rebounds are from his own misses. His defensive activity and board-crashing are elite, but he will foul out by halftime if he doesn't learn to play more in control.

I'm beyond stoked that Kanga is staying at least another year, because he is going to be a very good player for us. But our best hope for getting back to the NCAAT is Tony finding another big with Riley's offensive game who can play a little defense.
Sorry Tom I disagree with ur assessment ,no surprise there. I agree he can score, but offense is only 25% of the game, his defense was a turnstile, guards out rebounded him, and his overall effort was marginal. If Kanga played the minutes Riley got he would have scored very close to Riley's numbers, he out rebounded him, blocked the middle and was a shot blocker, more importantly he played with energy. Not sure what games you were watching but you need to go to an eye Dr and get checked out.
