Seems like a waste of money and if they don’t win a national title next year hopefully everyone calms the “F” down. These are developing players, not in their prime professionals.

can a lawyer comment on this? @Verdad

1) i doubt if this pertains to GMU as I dont think they have enough NIL money to keep a HS athlete on retainer

2) Since most HS athletes are under 18, how can a legally binding contract be signed with a minor?

3) If the parents sign the contract is that legally enforceable on the minor?

4) Is this the extension of universities throwing out non-binding "offers" to prospective high schoolers?

5) will another University pay a buyer's fee to get a HS player out of this contract or take it out of his first year NIL money?

6) The future GMU Football team needs to add another Million $ or two to the Budget to cover this

Haha - I can answer that a minor can not sign a legally binding contract and a parent can not commit them to anything that would carry over to when they are an adult.

But I am sure they are all well aware of the legalities and risk of minors not being bound by contracts and will work their way around it.

My proudest legal moment is still when I was 15 and wrote back to Columbia house that I was a minor and can not be held legally responsible for the cassettes and membership they were trying to charge me for. I got the lion king soundtrack and 11 other 90’s hits for free and never heard from them again. It’s the circle of life.

George Mason should team up with NOVA and treat it like a farm system. Let local kids play a year or two at NOVA, get better, then transfer to Mason ready to contribute. It’s a win-win—Mason gets developed players, and NOVA kids get a clear path to D1 hoops without leaving the area.

Heavey references to Coach L

I am hoping that a year after the House Agreement goes into effect, or when the next Conferences TV contracts get renegotiated, there is some type of conference reorg in Football and Men's BBal based on NIL Budgets

Shouldn’t we aim higher? Community college players?

I get the skepticism—but this isn’t about settling. It’s about adapting.

Look around—coaches aren’t investing in high school players the way they used to. You pour in time, coaching, resources, and by the time they’re actually good, they’re getting poached by a bigger program. It’s a broken model for schools like Mason.

That’s why a partnership with NOVA makes sense. You let local kids develop close to home, get real game reps, and then when they transfer, it’s to Mason—not away from it. You’re not guessing what kind of player you’re getting—they’ve already been coached to fit the system. They walk in ready to contribute, not learn on the fly.

This isn’t about lowering expectations. It’s about building continuity, culture, and a sustainable path to success. The best programs develop their own pipeline.

Also let’s not forget Skinn was a Juco player.

I don’t think it will work for several reasons. One, you can’t prevent the best players from transferring somewhere else. Two, you’ll need a lot more than 13-15 players a year to find 5 that will be good enough to play for you.

Community college players are below D2 and D3 talent wise. You realize that right?

Aren't there a bunch of different JUCO levels? I'm not aware of any player from my local community college going D1. I imagine the same high level JUCO's churn out D1 players each year.

I’m not necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with your take—and I’ll admit my idea isn’t perfect. I’m just throwing out some outside-the-box thoughts because it’s the offseason and, honestly, I’m bored.

That said, the core of my point still stands: college basketball is evolving, and it’s becoming harder for high school players to land scholarships.

There are going to be a ton of hidden gems who slip through the cracks and end up at the D3 or JUCO level.

I’m not suggesting we load up the roster with NOVA players. I’m suggesting we build relationships with certain JUCO programs so our staff knows that players coming from those teams are well-coached, disciplined, and already developed to fit Mason’s defensive-first style.

I watched this thread and I causes me to have a question...

Does NOVA (and not the one in Philly) have a basketball team? Or are you suggesting the creation of one?

But what percentage of our budget would you attribute to essentially our G League team? OR would you try to pull it off for free?

Apparently, not any more!
