Stop with this revisionist history. Jordan Miller was a lot of things here, clutch is absolutely not one of them. He was never that guy. Neither was jaire.
yea the guy that went missing for 3/4 of every game and scored all of his points in a 5 min period was not Mr. Clutch

I have the suspicion you two are intentionally ignoring the larger point to argue over a detail. A made-up detail as well. Never used the phrase "clutch" in the post. Just referenced our past guys that filled the role of scorer when you needed a quick bucket that could take it up themselves.

I LOVE Josh, but he needs to be setup and given the ball. Not a guy you inbounds to w/3-4 second left and have him drive 94 feet to win it.

I'd actually argue that Sherrod and Bryan Allen were not these types of players. Dont' get me wrong, both of them were very good. However, it always seemed when the game was on the line that these guys dribbled off their foot or did something stupid. Sherrod is one of my favorites so it takes a lot to say that.

We saw Otis Livingston hit at least 2 game winners (I believe) during his time. For this team, I'm not sure how it goes.

The answer from everyone I’ve talked to in the program is Victor Bailey is a certified bucket getter. No idea if it’s accurate but he’s my best guess.

Your list is filled with guys who weren’t closers so I’m not quite sure what you’re statement is about if a closer does not inherently mean clutch. Closers are clutch players

He's def. a scorer. A bity streaky, but can fill up the basket. He'd be my best guess as to who fills that role when needed. But I've watched a lot of UT basketball and never really saw him racing it up the court for the quick shot. But he also had guys like Jaden Springer, Keon Johnson, Santiago Vescovi, Kennedy Chandler, and Zakai Zeigler as teammates, so didn't have to either.

this changes it a bit too if you add the race up the court as a necessity to the right answer. I am not sure we have that (Ticket or Bailey still my best guesses) Not really Coops game and I don't need to beat a horse dead on my PG thoughts.

I will go with Bailey and Big Ticket for your exercise

How is a closer, defined by you as being the guy you give the ball to with 3-4 seconds on the clock down 1, any different than being clutch?

If you want to double-down on misquoting me and completely missing the point, twice, feel free. I have no intention of arguing w/someone being intentionally obtuse.

Happy Halloween.

I asked two other board people and they were kind of confused on what your post meant too… maybe one of them can chime in

It was literally in the second sentence of the original post.
but then you picked one of the least speedy guys in Jaire Grayer as an option... hence the confusion. The players you picked and the words you used don't match... Kier and Greene on one end and Miller and Grayer on another on the same list for explosive end of game "get of their way" scorers is the confusing part. I have no idea who Mark Davis is but I assume he wasn't a super slow SF that barely did anything but shoot corner threes right?

I think it’s most likely VJ or Ticket, with the caveat that the offense will run through Josh if there’s enough time left on the clock to get the ball to him and let him work. That’s our 3 best players so I’m really going out on a limb lol

I would not give last year Ticket the ball on an iso play to end the game. He’s going to get open for a possible kickout off the ball or crash the glass if there is time for a rebound.

It’s got to be Bailey or Oduro.

Edit: if we are strictly taking about inbounding the ball to someone who will beat everyone down the court, that’s going to be Fernandez but he probably won’t start.

An end of game situation def., but I’m also thinking of a possession where the shot clock has 2-3 seconds on it. Essentially, when you don’t have enough time to setup a play and get an open shot w/movement, but rather you need a player to beat his guy (or guys) to create his own shot and make the basket.

If Oduro has the ball in that situation near the basket, def. But a lot of times it happens at the top of the key & you need someone to put their head down and drive or step back and knock it down with a hand in their face. The consensus seems to be VBJ as that guy, who’s waiting to play his first real game in a Mason uniform, so just goes to show that we were missing it last season. Ticket is my favorite player on the team and does so many things, but that’s not one of them.

Well, Oduro repeatedly took his man off the dribble at the top of the key if they were guarding him tight. I’m not worried about him making that play against most of the bigs in the A10. The question will be if they play off him and dare him to shoot from outside will he be able to consistently hit that shot (the answer last season was no). Extending his range and his perimeter defense are precisely what he’s been working on all off-season so we will see.

And yes, none of Cooper, Ticket, Schwartz, Polite, or XJ could consistently finish plays like the one you just described. It was a big hole last season.

Polite could get to the rim but couldn’t finish, Cooper could beat his man but wasn’t explosive enough to finish drives and almost always had to pass it back out. Cooper worked on fitness to get quicker; I’m sure Polite has been working on finishing through contact, but who knows how that will go.

Ticket “could” beat his man (and he certainly can shoot over just about anyone) but he needs to be much more assertive with the ball.

Yeah how can we forget the buzzer beater there or against Richmond? I won’t.

But off the top of my head how about the game he had a crucial turnover against umass or Slu I think it was? And there had to be a few other examples as well.

It’s easy to remember when Sherrod did well but I know there are a few examples when he didn’t.

You just described every athlete that's ever participated in competitive sports...
