From Mason Hoops:

13 Keys to the Season by Alan Kelly

A lot of people have written a lot of words about what to expect from your Patriots this season, and most of those predictions will be wrong. So, instead of writing another season preview, I wanted to look a little deeper: what we can hope to see from each of the thirteen men on scholarship […]

Interesting approach. I was expecting to read a more generalized list of success factors, but this individualized perspective might actually be useful to the team, as it provided tangible steps for each player. Obviously, we're looking in from the outside, so the coaches will know what's best (hopefully) for the athletes, but this is helpful to me as a guy with his butt in a seat 20 feet above the court.

I'd be even more curious to read constructive criticism/advice for each member of our coaching staff.

Very well written with solid analysis. Nice to see some good young writers coming out of Mason. The biggest key will be how well the individual growth of the players translates into being a more cohesive team.

Interesting read. Regarding Wright, I would have addressed his defense as an area to work on. Defense seemed to be an afterthought at many times. The only real place I see his offense needing work is when he seems to disappear from games for long periods. I think being more focused on defense will help him to stay in the game and not disappear on offense for long stretches.

P.S. The new boards are great. Tapatalk is working well as well now. Now I can start visiting again more frequently.

While well written, shouldn't team leadership be discussed with respect to the seniors?

Love the avatar, Brian. LOL.

I agree - well-written piece. Nice to see something different from the same cut-and-paste preview everyone likes to throw out.

To Tom's point, I think cohesion will take a big jump this year, and it's something Johnny talked about in his interview. The players all seem to have recognized, either on their own or through Coach Hewitt, that cohesion is what makes a good team great.

Represent!

Kaufman and I were in a "Teamwork and Interpersonal Skills" class together, and our group wrote a paper on teamwork in basketball (Mason hoops, specifically), and the effect that communication, etc. has on output. That was fun. Interviewed Caputo and Konkol for it.

Haha - indeed.

Back to the topic at hand. I definitely think the fact (most of) the team has played a lot together should play a factor. Lot of experience. Now they just need to turn it into results against higher competition.

Dick Patrick is back with his "Around the Rim" series on GoMason.com.

Biggs, I don't think Dick Patrick is still doing it. There is no byline or photo of him, and the Around the Rim header mysteriously disappeared after you posted the link.

No kidding. Yeah, when I first clicked the link, it showed Patrick's photo and everything looked like it had in the past. I guess a staff member wrote it. Bummer.

Nice job. I would add CE needs to continue with his excellent 3 point shooting. I am hoping he can hit another two baskets per game while continuing to shoot 50% from beyond the 3 point line.

Completely agree, Walt. Corey's shooting tends to fall under the radar, but only two players in all of college basketball shot 50-percent from behind the arc last year. Corey didn't have enough attempts to qualify, but it does show what a weapon he can be when he chooses to shoot.

Limiting turnovers to 12 a game will go a long way to us enjoying a lot of success this year. I like what I read and hear. Very excited to see how it all plays out.
