GIVING DAY 2023
Maybe I’m just fat, but if Mason Ever upgrades the arena I hope they make the seats wider.

Lol, the seats aren't made for us tall people either.

If they ever get serious about upgrades and soliciting fan input, I'll definitely mention that maybe the seats should be catered to the width and heights of people today and not in 1985. It is even worse in a Broadway show or on an airplane for people of my kind.

Anyway, I hope the schedule starts leaking at some point, I have to think the next month there should be at least a game or two.

Yeah I’m def interested to see when scheduling info starts to come out. We’re seeing other A10 schools with some very solid noncon schedules already, I’d like to see us grab a couple P5s and a very solid mid major tournament team before schedules start to fill up. Did we confirm what MTE we are playing yet?

WKU is not a low major
Cusa is either the lowest mid major or highest low major. That’s really up to your interpretation. Been a one bid league most years. Not sure how that doesn’t qualify but I’m not dying on this hill

In 2019, CUSA as a conference was 11th in spending with an average budget of just under $3 million. They were 13th in Conference NET (pre-pandemic season seems fair). That's pretty squarely near the top of the mid-major ranks (if you consider AAC, A-10, WCC, and MWC as their own tier above mid-major and below Power 6 -- there's a pretty big spending gap between the P6 and the next tier and between the WCC at 10th and CUSA at 11th).

I mean GCU spent over $5mill and I wouldn't consider them to be a mid major. CUSA has gone way backwards last 5 or so years

". . . we dove deep into the past to research teams and came up with the thought that a conference is a mid-major as conference if it sends ≤ 20% of their teams to the NCAA tournament in the past five seasons. We know finances play a major role, but we believe that this is a solid starting point. So for the sake of these rankings, using our definition, the AAC, ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC were not rated.

Now, with the mid-major conferences decided, what’s next? I took the time to use this season’s metrics as a starting point. I compiled KenPom, NET, BPI, and Torvik ratings. I averaged them together and focused on conferences that were deeper, conferences that had better teams at the top, and lastly using the eye-test to divide the mid-major conferences into five tiers.

The first tier, are the conferences that have the potential to earn multiple bids to this year’s NCAA tournament. The second tier has multiple teams in each conference who could win a game in March. And the last three tiers, of course, could surprise us in March, but most likely have only one team who could make their own Cinderella story.

Tier One

Despite Gonzaga being in tier one of the mid-majors, the Atlantic 10 took the top spot due to a large part because of the depth of the league at the top. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the top seven teams in the conference were able to win the A-10 tournament. The WCC, MW, and MVC all have two teams for sure with some playing with a third quality team."

"Tier Two

Tier two contains some quality teams and conferences. These three mid-major conferences will be on the radar of every major program come March.

Given 32 conferences, the “middle” is 16th and with 352 teams about 151 is in the middle. So how you define low major (let call it the bottom third?) would put low major conferences 21st-32nd and teams 234-352.

Obviously you can’t really do a year by year, so some kind of rolling 5 year or probably even 10 year span to make it fair. And I’m not going to sit here and crunch that many numbers for free.

I went back to 2016 and CUSA was ranked 21st in conference RPI that year vs. 2020 when they were ranked 17th under the same metric, 2019 they were ranked 13th. So I don’t buy the backward slide argument.
