WOW. Mind blown he has that many.

Wonder where our 2000's squads rank here.... interesting to see what Folarin, Tony, Lamar's steals numbers are

It's weird when you go into the record books, because you find some surprising things. Who is third all-time in career 3-point percentage? Why Jordan Carter at .398

Campbell is 5th all-time in career assists, Long is 8th.

Steals: Campbell had 126, Pearson had 127, Corey Edwards had 137, Jai Lewis had 140, Cam Long had 147

I blame most of this weirdness on Five Two.

Interesting, 6 of the 10 highest number of team steals in a season occurred during the Coach L era, 3 occurred during the Paul Westhead era, 1 occured during the Paul Hewitt era, and none during the Coach Paulsen era - https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.si.../documents/2020/11/23/2020_21_Record_Book.pdf:

Steals

1. 304: 1998-99

5. 266: 1994-95

Evidently, this hasn't hindered Javon & Otis.

Individual achievement is different than team philosophy though. You take our 1-2-2 zone press and Javon and Miller’a ability to get steals out of it when they work together and are aggressive, but most of the time it is designed to just slow the other team down and not generate a turnover.

While Mason's system does not generate steals to the degree that vcu's does, would it surprise you that Mason's steals per game has been trending up during the Coach Paulsen era and is 6th in the A10 this season - https://atlantic10.com/stats.aspx?path=mbball&year=2020:

Steals Per Game

1 vcu 10.44
2 Richmond 8.64
3 Saint Louis 8.25
4 UMass 7.73
5 La Salle 7.65
6 George Mason 7.18
7 Rhode Island 6.71
8 St. Bonaventure 6.33
9 Fordham 6.25
10 George Washington 6.15
11 Saint Joseph's 6.07
12 Duquesne 5.93
13 Davidson 4.73
14 Dayton 4.29

In the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, steals per game were 2.9 & 5.0, respectively.

Yes it would. Gemini indicates his system is not designed to generate steals, and I am pretty sure I remember Paulsen saying something exactly like that. Then again, since almost nothing has gone as Paulsen has stated, it shouldn't surprise me that it didn't go as he planned...

This got a legit laugh.

Mason doesn't have a "system" designed for steals the same way vcu does with the press or Richmond does with Gilyard playing center field/safety when he's defending the weak side, but it's a side effect of how much we crash double the post. Guys drive into the paint or throw entry passes and suddenly they're swarmed and I would guess about half or more of our steals come from that.

Also Javon has long arms and quick hands so he just pickpockets guys straight up a decent amount. Pablo saying we're trending up every year and we're still only in 6th kinda says a lot about the emphasis here.

it’s a very polite press. It mostly slows the other team down but it’s nice when they have Greene and Miller at the top and they force a few turnovers.

Now, I didn't say trending up every year. But, you bring up a good point regarding emphasis. We all know that Coach Paulsen places a significant emphasis on rebounding margin. But, Coach Wooden used to say that turnover margin was more critical to success than rebounding margin.

Interestingly enough, we are also 6th in turnover margin, but there's a massive gulf between the top 4 and us (vcu is 4th at +2.94 and we are 6th a +0.82 -- Richmond is +5.07). Davidson and Bonaventure is a surprise where they are, but it looks like it's largely because they cause so few turnovers that the margin is so low. URI has a real turnover problem sitting at 14th in turnover margin and 1st in number of turnovers per game. Still can't believe we couldn't capitalize on URI's badness this season and Dayton's roster turmoil (at least in the first game).

Looking at the big picture we should all be thankful we lost those games. Nothing could be worse long-term than putting up a hollow “winning record” and having the administration use that as justification to keep Dave. As it stands right now, we’ve beaten two teams with a winning record this season and one of them plays in D2.
