When Should Marquise Moore Become the Starting PG?

I am not one of the posters who has complained about Corey Edwards. But, I believe that we've seen the future at the PG position and his name is Marquise Moore. IMO, he has the poise, athletic ability, and all-around skills (even shot blocking) to be the starter this season. When is the best time to turn the floor leadership over to him?

I have pulled for Corey probably more than anyone else, but I believe that Marquise Moore should be getting the bulk of the point guard minutes immediately.

I'd say now...considering we're currently in a losing disposition it can't really hurt us if he has any real freshman mistakes [and it gets him more experience faster]

Now. Give him the next two weeks to run with the first team, and then start him in Hawaii. I think Corey has actually played more proactively lately and I love his hustle, but he is better suited coming off the bench. We really need to get away from Allen playing the point.

With this team having no reliable post-up big men other than maybe Marko, we need our PGs to penetrate and dump it off to guys like Copes and J2 for easy layups. If the basket is blocked, Moore and Edwards need to pass it back out to our shooters on the perimeter (which is the strength of this team).

Moore is obviously the better of the two at that, because he is capable of finishing in the lane. Every scouting report on this team shows that Corey has no plan once he gets into the lane.

Now...if his ankle is ready for the extra minutes. I, too, have seen some improvement with Corey, but we do need to shake things up. I haven't given up on this team yet, but the next two weeks will be pivotal to determine how the rest of the season is going to go.

I'd continue to start Edwards, but would give Moore the bulk of the overall minutes most nights. Reason being is I think we lose Edwards mentally if he's sent to the bench (ala Jordan Carter late in his career). Give him the opening 4 minutes of each half and one other 3-4 spell midway through each half.

When exactly has Copes or J2 ever had an "easy layup"?

CE should also be out on the floor, with Moore in my opinion, in a late game situation when we need a stop. Hewitt pulled Corey in the last USF possession and we wound up having Jenkins trying to guard Collins on the drive. Granted Jenkins did a pretty good job on him forcing him into a fadeaway jumper, but one wonders...

We need to be thinking as much about defense as offense at this point.

But yes start Moore or at least give him 25 minutes a game minimum.

Agreed. Why not start Moore now? This will allow BA to play w/o being the primary ball-handler, where he is most effective....Plus, if Edwards does produce off the bench in his role, depending on game situation, he can still be on the floor to close games.

The last time J2 got an easy lay up he got rim-checked.....Copes doesn't know the meaning of an "easy" lay up. Perhaps Copes would be better suited for the Mason Track & Field program as a shot putter?

I think Corey's got a lot of heart, and he's doing his best, but he just isn't the best PG on the team.

What I saw yesterday was that when MM was on the floor, the team looked functional where all 5 players could be a threat. With Corey, except for the occasional outside shot, is no threat to the other team. When Marquis was on the floor, not only was he a threat to dish to a teammate in a position to do something, but the time they stayed away from him, he drove the middle and scored. That's what we need! Of course that's just one of many, but we need all 5 players on the team to be a threat to the other team.

Start Marquis now!

I agree wholeheartedly with the general consensus on this thread. No knock on Corey, who I fully believe is doing the best he can whenever he is on the floor, but Moore should get the start or at least the majority of the minutes until he proves that he's not up to it.

Start Corey. Give Moore starter's minutes. Keeps both kids motivated and helps the senior to freshman transition.

For those who want Corey to continue to start (but give Marquise starter's minutes), how do you address the Patriots' tendency to get off to slow starts offensively this season?

Valid point. Maybe Sherrod needs to come off the bench since he seems to get off to slow starts every game. Just let him come in at the 4 minute mark and play the rest of the game.

No clue on the slow starts. Not sure you can pin that on one player. Seems to be a team symptom, but as Tom said it is a valid point.

As pointed out...might as well start Moore.....it cant be any worse than it already is from a W-L stand point...so let the kid get some minutes.

Nice as that would be, I don't think you're going to let your 5th year senior top scorer start the game on the pine.

You're right that we can't afford to do so, but Hewitt obviously wasn't happy with the way Sherrod played against Oklahoma given that he was on the bench at the end (unless it was an injury). Maybe it would send an even bigger message to not start him in Haawii, because Sherrod needs to realize we can't win a game in which he only scores 7 points.
