Welcome New AD Marvin Lewis

I like it, particularly: Lewis led a brand and visual identity refresh, launched new fan engagement initiatives and premium amenities, developed a divisional strategic plan, and implemented a long-term financial model that elevates the baseline student-athlete experience. As a member of the executive leadership team, Lewis led the external relations team focused on revenue generation, fan engagement, strategic communications, and athletics and recreation storytelling.

Get the fans out and pick a f**king green and stick with it!

Personally think this is a wildly uninspired hire. Nothing in his background at Brown screams that he has the experience needed to navigate our most pressing needs, namely corporate sponsorship, fundraising, and NIL. Brown athletics is consistently among the bottom of the NCAA in any sport that matters. Cherry on top, he played for Paul f**king Hewitt. I’ll root for him, but damn if this doesn’t feel like a Mason hire.

This paragraph right here is all of it for me: "A former two-time captain of the Georgia Tech basketball team, Lewis graduated with honors from Georgia Tech in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in management before becoming a licensed CPA. He later earned a master's degree in taxation from Georgia State in 2008. The guard led the Yellow Jackets to the 2004 national championship game."

I like the basketball connection. Makes sense.

"Lewis led a brand and visual identity refresh, launched new fan engagement initiatives and premium amenities..."

Yeah, we could use these things...

We heard about this a few weeks ago from a reliable source but didn’t think it was appropriate to break an AD hire. We can confirm he approved the Tony hire.

We have vetted this guy via the internet: we are hyped.
Honest question, what makes you hyped about it? Take a look at Browns “identity refresh” and then look at their athletics attendance, what jumps out at you?

He’s more than qualified when you look at his full body of work beyond just a few years at Brown. He’s also a basketball first person and known as a young rising administrator in the college ranks.

My hope is that he actually pushes the university to challenge the status quo, and revamps the athletic dept. It’ll be crucial that he brings in experienced, innovative minds who are experts in the areas of fundraising and NIL. Our athletic dept is starving for new thinking, hopefully this kicks that into gear.

We are clearly going young and inexperienced at both AD and HC, I want that. We need a fresh start with basketball minded people. He wasn’t Browns AD, and I don’t discredit people for being associated with Hewitt.

“Lewis joined Brown in 2021 and served on the Division's executive leadership team, overseeing external relations, human resources, business administration, facilities and operations. Lewis also served as sport administrator for men's basketball, women's lax, men’s/women’s soccer.”

Our AD’s community relations has been baaaaad. I like his responsibilities at Brown but don’t care too much about the results of Brown’s athletic department.

This is what I like, that we are the one poaching a young guy who many have identified as an up and coming AD -

“Lewis has established himself as one of the nation's most respected young administrators. In June 2017, he was one of 13 administrators named to the CollegeAD NextUp list, which was assembled by a panel of athletic directors. Most recently, he was named the 2018-19 College Athletic Business Management Association (CABMA) Manager of the Year and successfully completed the prestigious NCAA Pathway Program for aspiring athletics directors and conference commissioners in June 2020.”

Brown just started their excellence initiative a few years ago, a little premature to say they are done and it was a failure anyway.

I'm not sure Brown had much to work with and little ambition to go anywhere with a refresh. It's also not like he was the final say in things - lots of stakeholders in that process to hold up progress. I'm sure he'll deal with the same at Mason, but hope that he has more success this time.

Here’s what I see.

Young up and comer who has been a student athlete, was at Georgia Tech, is from the dmv, and has been the administrator for mens basketball most importantly. Those are all very good things. Yes he did play for Hewitt, but that has no impact on how he will be as an administrator other than be subject to jokes that he probably has already heard.

I don’t know about his fundraising abilities. Did he help get a ton of money? Did the facilities get upgraded? That was something Brad did at Jacksonville and we didn’t get as much as we thought we would in that regard. Basketball is the focus of our athletics program and there is plenty more we can do to help. Will he help our budget?

At the end of the day we need someone who’s going to get shit done and challenge the status quo. Don’t let 3 year studies happen without execution, and really connect with our fanbase.

Also, if he endorsed Tony as our coach, that’s a good thing. They are from the same era of basketball, so I suspect that could play very well in his favor. Hopefully he’s ready to give Tony everything he needs to succeed.

Still wish it was a Deputy responsible for basketball at a big time program, but I'll give Marvin a chance.

Always thought he did well in Cincinnati.

Interesting note... Lewis played under Paul Hewitt for 4 years including his senior year where he helped lead GT to the Final Four and National Championship game.

I'm more than willing to see what he can do. He has the right experience even if he suffered from The Virus at one point.
