Searching for Vaughn Gray

Pablo

Hall of Famer
Vaughn Gray did not play in the last 3 games (Oregon State, St. Mary's (CA), & Penn) after playing in the first 10 games of the season. His last action was 4 minutes in the first half of the Iowa State game. Prior to the ISU game, Vaughn played 23 minutes vs. Oklahoma in the BB&T Classic, which was the 6th game this season that he played at least 15 minutes.

So, what happened?

Doesn't make much sense. You'd think he would be able to get on the floor with Wright struggling so much. He must be back in the Hewitt Doghouse or something.

Not this again...lol. He's in the same place he's always been. Sitting on the bench.

Ask Hewitt at a presser......because it makes literally no sense.
Double-secret probation, sir?

Holloway happened. What else are you going to do except sit Sherrod?, and I personally don't think it gets you much. Keep the Senior on the floor and get him out of his funk.

Caveat - I have not watched the last couple of games but have read the boards and have seen some mentions of SW just going through the motions at times. If that is really the case then he probably should be yanked for a decent spell or two.

The last time I saw VG play, he missed an open layup against ISU. He was then pulled soon afterward. Was that his last play? I don't remember if he touched the ball (or rim) after missing the layup.

Is it possible there is some type of blood feud between VG and SW? The two don't seem to have any chemistery on the floor together so i have wondered about this for a long time. They are perfectly suited to complement each other on the court but it never happens.

According to the play-by-play, he missed the layup with 6:30 remaining in the first half. He came out 1 minute later, and then returned with 1:04 remaining in the half. He got a defensive rebound and finished the half.

Unless there was some altercation, I really can't understand how he went from the regular rotation to not playing at all.

Sherrod doesnt have the desire or care to actually hate somebody, so no I doubt its a blood feud.

I can't help but wonder if there are some serious chemistry/personality issues among a bunch of different guys that's been brewing for the past couple of years. If so, it's on the coaches to get it sorted out and get them all on the same page.

What bugs me is the double standard involving Gray as opposed to others on the team. His leash is ridiculously short.
It is pretty common knowledge Gray was dealing with some issues last year. But all I heard from multiple people, including those on the coaching staff, was how Gray potentially was in line for a breakout year.
Guess not.

This bothers me as well. Gray for some reason just doesnt get a shake at all, meanwhile Copes, J2, AO can go out there and do more harm them help and still get run out there.

I would like to see Gray earn more time as well, but a huge misconception here is that guys like Copes, J2 and Okoloji are taking time from him. If Gray is going to earn some minutes, he needs to take them away from Allen, Wright or Holloway.

The obvious candidate to lose some minutes would be Sherrod, but then we are conceding that he'll never break out of his slump. As much as I like giving Moore additional minutes, the solution might be to start Allen, Sherrod and Holloway in the backcourt and then bring Moore and Gray off the bench. Corey would be used sparingly as needed.

I wasn't insinuating Gray would go in and be a center lol. I was just meaning the leash and decision to let those three continue to get minutes no matter what their performance or behavior merits meanwhile no matter what is going on with Gray, he still is glued to the bench.

As for actual position, I would say that as soon as Holloway or Wright need a break Gray should be the one getting up and going in.
