Yes he was. He was stoned to death. (Someone may insert a joke here about being stoned.) Anyway, we don't know the date, obviously, but it was a date chosen by the Catholic church in ancient times to honor him. We don't know the date of Christmas either, though it was probably sometime in the spring...waaay to much to go into here, but suffice it to say, it's one of a multitude of things the early church got wrong. Still, it's not the date that matters, it's the meaning behind it.
