Mason Madness

Saw a little discussion in another thread, but wondered what everyone thought of Mason Madness? I agree with previous poster in the recruits thread who noted how much better the event seems to have gotten the last 3-4 years, especially with production value.

Kinda disheartening that the President of the university couldn't make it to Mason Madness. Athletics just doesn't seem to be a priority with him. I thought the ath dept put on a good show last night and Cabrera no shows? Say what you want about Merten, but he never woulda missed Mason Madness.

He is horrible. I always sit in the student section, and for the games that Cabrera does attend, he just stares at his phone the whole time. You are 100% correct, I miss Merten.

Maybe Cabrera isn't going to yell at refs and would rather tweet or soak up the atmosphere in general, but to say athletics is not a priority to him is ludicrous. He stated last year (someone posted what he said) during the A-10 tournament how important the mens program is to the school and has shown with his hiring of Brad Edwards and the support of the A-10 move, that he cares. I'd be much more concerned if he didnt attend most home games (esp the more crucial ones).

And my mom always taught me that actions speak louder than words. Yes he can throw some quotes about how important athletics is, but he's the president of the university. If you asked him about the importance of the tiddlywinks club, he would talk about how important it is and that it's a priority for the university. That's the standard presidential answer for anything. But let's look at his actions:

I think you're seriously overreacting. I don't think it's a big deal that he checks his phone during games rather than watch Copes miss free throws.

He's heavily involved in social media interaction and sees it as a great way to let people know about the happenings at Mason. Athletics, as well as all other areas of the university, are important to him.

Cabrera isn't the problem.

There's no question that Merten is a great fan of Mason sports. But, in comparing the Presidents' impact on athletics, I believe that you should be more concerned about their decision-making and their commitment of the requisite resources to succeed.

This whole deal about Cabrera not going to games is a waste of interweb space. I would bet that there are many university presidents that don't attend every (or any for that matter) basketball game.

Merten was an aberration, get over it.

Oh, btw. . . he is just out of his first year on the job, Merten probably had this place on cruise control the past couple of years, and had confidence in his employees to do what he wanted done. Cabrera, is probably busy as all get out, and wants his hands in everything.

Shevon Thompson can run pretty well for his size.

I'm really hoping Royal lives up to the hype, but I think Thompson could be the real revelation in this new crop of players. He might not be very polished offensively, but he can run the floor, score around the basket, block some shots, grab a lot of boards, and put a body on guys he's defending.

I can only think of a few guys we've had with his size over the years (Jesse Young and Byron Tucker come to mind), so hopefully he can help to strengthen several of our team's defenses — namely rebounding and low-post defense.
