In a way, it's hard to complain considering the middling state of GMU bball since L left. At the same time, I'm assuming we are the largest of the A10 schools? If so, one would think sheer numbers would increase our total.

I was curious to see how we compare to A10 schools in attendance so I posted the chart above. That in turn made me do some quick research and math to see how we rank in regard to percent of seats filled based on capacity. I discovered we're 13th out of the 14 teams, ahead of only Fordham. Discuss.

Disclaimer: The capacity of each arena varied, in some cases, according to the source. So this may not be 100% accurate but it's pretty damn close and it continues to paint an ugly picture for an apathetic fan base and student body.

Dayton (Dayton Arena) - 13,407/13,409 = 99.98%
vcu (Siegel Center) - 7558/7,637 = 98.96%
La Salle (Glaser Arena) - 2,070/3000 = 69.0%
St. Bonaventure (Reilly Center) - 3,384/5,480 = 61.75%
Richmond (Robins Center) - 4,329/7,201 = 60.1%
Loyola Chicago (Gentile Arena) - 2,407/4,381 = 54.9%
St Joe's (Hagan Arena) - 2,053/3,800 = 54.02%
Duquesne (Cooper Field House) - 2,075/3,500 + 48.14%
Davidson (Belk Arena) - 2,429/5,295 = 45.8%
St. Louis (Chaifetz Arena) - 4,826/10,600 = 45.5%
Rhode Island (Ryan Center) - 3,409/7,657 = 44.5%
GW (Smith Center) - 2002/5000 = 40.04%
GMU (EBA) - 3,354/9,840 = 34.1%
Fordham (Rose Hill Gymnasium) - 873/3470 = 25.1%

Maybe I'm wrong, but after vcu, don't you have the numbers backward?

I think he did average attendance / total capacity for each arena. So this shows that while our attendance is midpack, our percentage full is low compared to the rest of the league (although EBA is one of the larger arenas).

Needless to say, it beats the drum that the building continues to be too large (especially for basketball)

EBA is a multi-use facility. Excess capacity - in terms of Men's (& Women's) BBall is sold as seats to multiple other events - in which GMU as a whole gets a cut of via the Monumental Management Contract.

A large number of the other A-10 are too small and/or poorly located to receive additional revenue for non BBall events.

For me, a key metric would be % revenue and profit from GMU BBall as a portion of Total EBA revenue and profit.

Once known, there could be an evaluation of closing off the top 15-20 rows of the Upper Concourse for BBall games, then a re-optimization of ticket pricing levels to keep it revenue neutral.

EBA is usually in the top 100 worldwide in terms of arena revenue.

I couldn’t find anything current, but for instance, in 2019 EBA was ranked 63rd in total ticket sales right behind Spark Arena in Aukland and TD Garden in Boston. I’m pretty sure this only counts non-athletics events (maybe only concerts). But total revenue from those sales was listed at over $8 million.

If someone wants to subscribe to Pollstar and get more recent data, go for it.

Yes, that's what I thought. Looks like he's edited it since I posted.

I’ve lived by EBA for the last 5 years and I can promise you that is not the case anymore.

I’ve lived by EBA for the last 5 years and I can promise you that is not the case anymore.

I did see a Billboard article for concert venues with a heatmap and while DC and Baltimore were represented, Northern Virginia was not.

Still, there is a big difference between non-athletic events at EBA versus the Siegel Center.

I don't think anyone mentioned it, but there were mobile beer vendors walking around the concourse and up and down the stairs during the game on Saturday. There were also some pop-up beer vendors along the concourse. Don't think I've ever seen that before. Just wanted to give some credit to the title of this thread for any of the lurkers who may be reading the boards. Keep up the good work beer anon!

Forgot to mention that El Fresco was also open! We got some dank chicken nachos. Whoever heard my complaint earlier this season and opened El Fresco I tip my hat to you. Only decent food outside the Gold Room.

EBA is too big for basketball but if we’re only gonna have the one arena, it’s the right size for GMU. It’s a school of 40,000 and convocations and the like aren’t getting any smaller.

In the future would like to see a same capacity replacement, but have it be two-tiered like the Ryan Center, with the tiers being separated by an electronic score ribbon. If attendance remains dire, it’s much easier to close off a second tier than draw an arbitrary line in a single tier.
