First meeting this year:
We beat St. Joe’s 60-52 in front of a raucous Homecoming crowd of 7,335 at EBA on Saturday, February 7. Jahari Long (20) and Riley Allenspach (13) led us in scoring. Jaiden Glover-Toscano (14), Derek Simpson (13), and Austin Williford (11) paced the Hawks. Glover-Toscano had all 14 of his points in the first half. Shutting him down in the second was the key to the game. We held them to just 30.8% from the field and 27% from deep. It was without a doubt one of our better defensive efforts on the year.

Thoughts: St. Joe’s is currently tied for 4th place so this is a big game on all counts.

If we lose we’re rapidly fading out of the top 4. An 8-1 start is beginning to look like a total collapse to 9-9. Damn I hate saying that but we’re lost right now.

Discuss.

Don't play the 4 guard lineup.
Start Adebayo or Ellington with Riley. Riley needs rebounding and defensive help.
Bring Kanga and Stas in off the bench together. Kanga rebounds well and Stas can space the floor on offense.
Let Booker get some minutes from Presley.

They gave up 20 offensive rebounds the last time these two teams played so I’ll co-sign on this one.

We can’t have players being lackadaisical on closeouts either, or giving up on fighting through screens.

Limit open looks and fight for every rebound they can win this game.

Was at the Memphis USF game last night…serious defense from USF and the refs let them play. CTS needs to show that film prior to the game.

As of the end of today, Mason, St. Joe's, and Dayton/Duq will be in a three-way tie. This makes the game at St. Joe's absolutely, critically, and crucially HUGE. Mason wins and we're still in the hunt for top-4. Mason loses and it's most likely #5 – #8, but not necessarily.

Head-to-head, we lose to both Dayton and Duquesne, and of course in a three-way.

In a three-way tie with one of the D's and SJ, and a Mason win at SJ, then we would be 2 — 1, D at 1 – 1; SJ 1 – 2 = Mason wins that tiebreaker. A loss @ SJ on Wednesday flips the standings, making us 1 – 2... and we're out.

If it comes to head-to-head versus SJ then it's really not all bad if we lose to them on Wednesday. Our records would 1 – 1 and we"d go to the next tie-breaker, best common opponent. SLU and vcu beat SJ. At worst we're going to be 0 – 1 versus SLU and 1 – 1 against vcu—advantage, Mason.

The best policy, however??? Just win.

Obviously it's very early in Steve Donahue's tenure at St. Joe's, but the posts on their message board indicate a significant improvement in coaching.
