Game 1 - American University, Nov 8th, 7 PM, No TV

Walk-On
I know the win was not done with the stomp on their throats authority that everyone was expecting... But did anyone else notice that the A10 record Fri-Sun was 12-1 while our CAA brethren managed a 1-12 opening weekend record?
I feel bad for them.

Couple positives and negatives that may not have been mentioned:

We pressed and trapped trying to force turnovers, not just to control the tempo. Pretty sure a lot of people complained about this last year.
Exactly. We did this very little last year. Two man trap the ball handler a third sits back waiting for the steal. A number of games we would trap without a third player making an attempt at the steal.

Pat at point is something many of us would like to see and have speculated about...all of us except for PH, that is.

None of us are is privy to what goes on in practice, so you have no idea what the coaches have tried. I'm pretty confident that Patrick would be getting some run at the point if he showed any ability to handle the ball at the DI level. What exactly have you seen that indicates to you that he can do that?

My guess is that we see Allen at the point a lot more if Edwards doesn't figure some things out, but I wouldn't be so quick to assume that it means Holloway would start at the 2. For those paying attention Friday night, Gray was the first guard off the bench, not Holloway. I thought that was very telling.

Hewitt implied on more than one occasion last season that Holloway had been or would be given opportunities to run the point in practice. If we don't see it happen in a game, I'm sure there's a good reason.

I never got a response from George Mason. But, I did write a complaint on the Neulion website and they emailed me the next day saying they were going to refund the money I spent on the subscription (1 day pass) within 7-10 days.

Interestingly enough, I bought the A-10 streaming subscription so that I can watch the away games too. I watched the game through their site, and it worked flawlessly. It was just feeding the Patriotvision stream, so I'm not sure why it worked there, but not on GoMason.com.

I noticed that all the links for PatriotVision on GoMason.com now take you to the Mason sections of the A-10 video portal rather than the old Mason-specific portal. Is that a new change, or did they make it before Friday?

I tried watching it via GoMason.com and the actual A10 website and neither worked for me. I'm over it, got my money back and will be attending the next game. Go to hell PatriotVision, get some glasses.

I've never seen it reported that Holloway is/was given a chance to play PG. This was reported in the Post last Dec, though - no mention of Pat, but VV:
Point guard remains a concern for Hewitt, who started sophomore Corey Edwards for the first time this season in place of junior Bryon Allen. They ended up splitting time, and neither stood out. “We have got to improve that position,” Hewitt said. “We’ve just got to get better. All options are available.” Hewitt suggested using Vertrail Vaughns, a junior shooting guard, to run the offense on occasion.

If Edwards is essentially just going to bring the ball up and is not penetrating and creating (which he hasn't been since early last year), you may as well have another guard in there who is either better defensively or a better scorer.

Dan, we're in complete agreement that all options should be explored. I just don't see Patrick as the solution, especially against teams who like to press and trap. Plus, he's much more lethal coming playing off the ball. For better or worse, it looks like Allen might be our best option, which is fine by me. That opens more minutes on the wing for Patrick and Gray.

Patrick runs a pretty decent fast break. That obviously doesn't translate to bringing the ball up the court against a press, but PH can handle and does have decent court vision.

I don't think we can read too much into Gray coming in first. I'm pretty sure he was subbing in for Sherrod Wright.

I don't like any of our guards bringing the ball up the court against a press -- not Allen, not Sherrod, certainly not Edwards. And I hope Hewitt doesn't try to employ a one-man press break, because we don't have one. We need to use a combination of Allen, Sherrod, Marko and Arledge to pass out of traps.

Hewitt did use VV as a PG in at least one game last year shortly after that article, when Corey and BA both got in foul trouble. I don't remember it being a disaster, but it wasn't memorable for being good, either.

Not everything Hewitt says makes it into the press.

I think that is the way it likely plays out (BA at PG) and probably should play out, contrary to what Hewitt has said (many times) about wanting to keep BA off the ball. Not quite sure what to make of those comments when he went away from it in the first half of the first game of the season.

AU won't be a great team this year, but Brennan will make them into a perennial contender in the Patriot League. He's been an assistant at AU, Princeton and Georgetown, so there's no question the guy knows how to coach.

Def agree, Brennan is a great coach

I just didn't know if someone was going to do the OOC thread to track the teams we play and their records

American had a game on NBC Sports Washington today and they had their own pregame update 30 min show before it. How did they get a show like that and where is ours?

They produced the show and the game. NBC SW simply aired the game.
