I feel like the attendance numbers always improve after the spring semester starts, especially if the team has a record like this one.

We will be either 10-3 or 11-2 OOC, and if we can win @ LaSalle and vs SLU, then we have a chance to really promote the hell out of the game vs vcu on 1/9.

Wild that there hasn't been a Skinn bump yet.
Not one person outside of the dedicated few thousand sickos already going to Mason games knows or cares who Tony Skinn is. There's no soft underbelly of the fanbase who was going to be convinced to go to a game because we hired a former player. You need fair weather fans for that, and you need to have won something in the past 15 years to have fair weather fans. The Venn diagram of "people who know who Tony Skinn is" and "people included in that 3,048 number" is just one circle.

That's a fair point. I guess I live in a bit of a fandom bubble when it comes to GMU.

The youths--they don't know their history and heritage!

I guess we can beat this deadhorse again. :p

I was curious to see where Mason was in the league, and its interesting they are about midpack. Hopefully they get a jump if they are playing well at the beginning of second semester with homecoming etc. It would be nice to average in the 5k range. I am surprised the URI is still in the top tier even though they are terrible. Perhaps they had 1 or 2 games that helped them.

That said, other programs are still having a very tough time drawing. Look no further than St Joes who is a league contender and potentially top 25 candidate very soon.

Not sure being mid-pack is all that accurate of an indicator considering we have a significantly larger arena than some of those programs around us...Bona, Davidson, Loyola, Joes. There's nothing good about being mid-pack and averaging 3k fans in a 10k seat arena.

Yeah no doubt there is no apples to apples comparison with the numbers. I merely was just taking the numbers for what they are.

I am surprised that a team like St Joes however is still struggling, but I was also surprised to see URI towards the top.

URI is towards the top but they're also at less than 50% capacity, so again, not something to be hyped about for them either.

Surprisingly enough Duquense averages 1945 and their arena is 3500, so they are over 50% capacity for their games, yet thats on the bottom of the list.

So yeah, it can be misleading and you have to break these numbers down more.

I know we limit capacity, but if we rip the tarps off the corners I think we are the third largest arena by capacity in the A10? I think we are 5th with the limited capacity.

Now given the state and history of this program, I’m not expecting us to be top 3 in attendance, but certainly 5,500-5,800 is a good year 3 benchmark goal if Skinn can get the program back on track and generate some excitement again.

Also, I expect any fan of college basketball in the DMV to know who Tony Skinn is even if they aren’t connected to the school. In the same way I know who Juan Dixon and Jeff Green and Pops Mensah-Bonsu are even though I have/had nothing to do with those schools. Will I know every player on every team from every school? No. But you should have some semblance of history if you’re to call yourself a college basketball fan.

I don't understand why you guys are so focused on the percentage. While it affects the atmosphere in the arena, that wasn't really the gist of this thread which was looking at our attendance stats and then comparing them to other A10 schools. The only time capacity affects that is if you are routinely hitting capacity and I believe only Dayton and vcu have come close to that recently.

Saint Louis averaged 7,000 last season, which is pretty close (just shy of 70%). I would take that in a second.

League average last year was 4,300 (good for 9th highest). Would want to be over the average at least given the size of our arena.

How can you compare attendance without looking at capacity? You’re not telling the full story without it. Bona averaging close to 4k in a 5.4k arena tells a much better story than us averaging 3k in a 10k arena….

This thread is so pointless as we all know why our attendance has been horrible.

If you are going to make that argument, then it doesn't make any sense having the discussion without discussing the local markets and competing entertainment, etc.

But that wasn't what the thread was about. The talk was about total and average attendance numbers. That is not impacted by the capacity of the arenas except for schools that are hitting max capacity. It is a pretty simple concept.
