Very well spoken. But how have you been in the coaching business for 15 years and still a DOBO?

He took a demotion to come here. He was an assistant at ETSU
I’m assuming there was a coaching change at ETSU and the entire staff got let go. No one voluntarily gives up an assistant coaching job to become a DOBO making peanuts for a living.

He made 120k in 2024.

Lamar Butler, by comparison, made 84,371.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but he’s making 6 figures here. That’s not peanuts.

Looking at his resume, he doesn’t have any collegiate playing experience (was a team manager at Georgia Southern), was a DOBO at Charlotte and UMD before getting an assistant at ETSU and then coming here to be a DOBO. Maybe he’ll get another assistant opportunity at a low/mid-major again. Maybe he’s peaked.

Interesting, I always thought DOBOs were just a step above grad assistants, making $35K.

The NCAA relaxed the rules on what coaching duties can be performed by staff members aside from the 3 named assistant coaches, so I believe that has allowed Bialkoski to perform a hybrid role with more duties than a traditional DOBO.

Yea Mark is basically a fourth assistant- he helps with recruiting too, it’s definitely a hybrid role. He’s too active on the bench to not be just a DOBO.

They send Mark into the Gold Room pre-game a good bit. He's always well-versed in the game plan and usually gives you something interesting they've scouted with the opponent.

Anyone know if Andy Fox is a good recruiter?

"Fox came to Army after five seasons at Vanderbilt, during which he served as director of scouting (2019-21), general manager (2021-22) and associate head coach (2022-24). During his tenure in Nashville under former NBA All-Star Jerry Stackhouse, he guided the Commodores to a pair of NIT appearances, as well as a 22-win season as associate head coach in 2022-23. That 2022-23 squad placed fourth in the SEC, the program's best-finish in 13 seasons, while Stackhouse garnered SEC Coach of the Year honors in the process.

The program also ranked as the most improved in the SEC over his first three seasons at Vanderbilt, jumping 89 spots in the NET over that span.

Fox recruited and developed elite talent while with the Commodores. He was instrumental in the signing of the program's 2022 and 2023 classes, which ranked No. 12 and No. 32 nationally on Rivals.com. What's more, he worked closely with a pair of current NBA starters in Aaron Nesmith (Indiana Pacers) and Scottie Pippen Jr. (Memphis Grizzlies), while also aiding in the development of 2023 SEC Defensive Player of the Year and former Milwaukee Buck Liam Robbins."

Will Lamar Butler have to move to another school to become an assistant, or does he wait for the next opening here, or is he content with the DOPD role?

Serge Clement is now an assistant coach at Le Moyne:

Katie Pate, who worked at Mason Athletics for fundraising, is now at Appalachian State
Seems she left on good terms and went back to App State on her own accord.

However, I really don't know what to make of her leaving. Seems in this job with Mason she had a resource rich area to really build something to take the reigns and move the needle for Mason athletics fundraising and donor relationship building. From my interactions with her she was always open for dialogue in ideas and ways to bring in donors and major corporate donors and was actually putting plans in place. I believe she was a major factor in re-organizing the season ticket pricing plans and hospitality rooms.

Seems she has bounced around a lot in her career which is common in this industry. When she was at App State the first time she did very well (clip from Mason's release on her hiring back in December 2023) - "Most recently, Pate served as the Associate Athletics Director for Development/Major Gifts at Appalachian State University. In two years, Pate played a significant role on the major gift development team to realize $15M in fiscal support. In 2022-23, nearly 61% of all major gifts were from new prospects. Her major gift portfolio eclipsed $4.85M in Pate's two years with the Mountaineers. Spearheading a capital project for renovating the men's and women's basketball office suites, Pate brought in $650K in a short three-month span."

Are there any metrics to show what she brought in to Mason during her limited year and half here?

Thinking she feels like a bigger fish in a smaller pond at App State and better aligned for career success. Being in the DMV you are a small fish in a big pond - especially in this line of work.

With that... it's disappointing that we have to find another major hire to lead these efforts in such a short time and crazy time in college athletics - with the raise in ticketing fees, NIL, Patriot club growth, etc.

We need someone who has ties to the DMV region for this role moving forward. Someone who knows this area and has contacts in the corporate world- we have to seriously put greater emphasis into getting the right people in here who are in charge of fundraising, donor ship, etc. and who want to be here. I would even look at making this a contract position - making this a 3 or 4 year contract and then evaluating their track record after - either move on or give them a raise and another contract. It's tough if people come in and keep leaving after 2 years or get let go in 2 years or under. 3-4 years is a good amount of time to get a year under your belt to put in place an action plan to go execute with your team in place for the remaining years.

But knowing Mason's track record.... it will be rinse and repeat as they will probably bring in someone who is in their salary range or cheaper to do the job, and probably no rush or timetable since they used a committee last time to find and evaluate candidates.

I agree it sucks that we have to fill a big role in this crazy era of college athletics. I always saw Katie at Mason events, coaches shows, and watch parties and really enjoyed talking to her. It will be interesting to see who Mason hires for this big job.

I don’t have so much detail but athletics brought in 3m last year which was a record.

And there was a big donation that was part of that, from what I was told. Like it was a 1/3 of that donation. Unfortunately I didn’t get anymore details other than that.

Other than that I hope we get someone who could do what she did and more.
