GIVING DAY 2023
Are we sleeping on Kelly and Malik? Kelly looked pretty skilled and Malik has shown he can bang in the A10. Neither one is going to be Oduro, but that’s ok.

A10 always comes down to guard play anyway and hopefully Polite, Maddox, Billups, and Hall are up for it.
Agree with this. I think we have enough down low in Year 1 to get by in the A10...Haynes will obviously take that to another level next year.

I'm more intrigued by our guard play as well. I'm confident that Polite will continue to get better and could become a top PG in the A10...especially if he stays healthy.

- Who is our "go-to" guy when we need a big shot down the stretch? Probably Maddox.
- Who is Ronald (if he's not doing it himself) looking to go to on offense? Who does he trust?
- If Maddox is Option 1, who is Option 2 if he's in foul trouble or having an off night?
- Does Hall take the leap we and the coaching staff expect him to with more playing time?
- How do our guards/scoring options mesh? This will be answered as they play more games together.

Nah this is just me being too cynical. Newton may have just enough on the side of family problems that he could get his waiver and Kelly can definitely play the 4 himself too.

Haynes would be a sure thing though, the other guys are not sure things.

Go to Guy / Option 1 would be Maddox for sure. Kid is a pure scorer and shooter.... has ice in his veins. Just go back and watch his GW shot against Clemson to propel VT forward in the ACC tourney 2 years ago.

Option 2 would be Ronnie IMO. Hall is close.... need to see his game and how he has progressed but these 3 will be our prime time threats.

Really comes down to our front court to see what Kelly, Malik, Pavrette gives us along with Ball.

Have assumed from the start that Haynes wasn’t getting a waiver. If Newton doesn’t get one, Pavrette is gonna have to play rotation minutes because we’ll be pretty thin up front … might see Kelly some at the 4 although he should primarily be a 5.

This team will go as far as the four core guards — Maddox, Polite, Billups and Hall — can take it.

Pavrette played only 16 minutes a game last year for a very bad Central Michigan team. I have a hard time seeing him playing double digit minutes with us but he should see the floor. Hopefully he has been working on his free throws since he averaged under 30% the last 2 years.

Is he a relative of Sequan Singleton?

You never know. Bigs take longer to develop. He has the size and athleticism.

Imagine this -- he could actually double his free throw percentage and still be a liability from the line. But he is a big dude, can block shots and rebound, so if he does that for 8 to 10 minutes a game, we'll take it.

Kelly's fouls are going to be a huge factor, as we can absolutely not have Henry (43.4% FT) or Pavrette (27.3%) on the floor to close out games that we are winning.

Besides those 3, next tallest players are Hall and Ball at 6'7 neither of which is suited to play the 4 or 5. IMO this depth at the 4/5 is really where not having Newton/Haynes this season will hurt us.

Hall is 6-7, 220. Plenty big enough to play the 4 in the A-10 even if he’s listed as a guard.

He was 285 his freshman year!

I think his frame is thicker than Newton’s too, certainly he looks beefier than Gaines, who played the 4 for us.

As for having poor FT shooting bigs on the floor, if it’s an end of game situation you just stick 5 guards on the floor if you’re in-bounding the ball and do offense-defense switching when necessary.

Until Henry or Pavrette get the defensive rebound...

Are you sure he is still 220? He has lost a ton of weight, even since last year.
Like myself he had a lot to lose lol. 285 to 220 but as Gemini noted, he has broad shoulders and will be a nice mismatch against 4s who aren’t used to guarding guys who can handle and shoot the 3.
