So there is some precedent in the Ronaldo case (I'm sure FIFA realized that having him miss World Cup games diminishes somewhat the glamour of the event, so they bent the rule). On the other hand, as far as I know, phone calls from the head-of-state of one of the host countries weren't part of that scenario. So it looks a little fishy.

But FIFA's reputation has never been stellar -- e.g. essentially allowing graft on a wide scale in voting for determining host countries---so not a big surprise.

Would have been better if there was a former appeal process and a review board to determine whether a red card was deserved. Followed by an explanation/justification of their decision.

That's fair and very true about FIFA. It's a shame such a great sport is governed by such a corrupt institution. I guess at the end of the day the scandal was anticlimactic. Belgium rolled.
