"Relvao’s Departure Leaves Patriots Green" by Chris Metsala

Forward Daniel Relvao has chosen an odd time to leave GMU. In the week leading up to the 2017 opening games against Lafayette and Louisville, the 6-9 Portuguese transfer announced his departure – despite many seeing this as a potential breakout season for him. In the statement released by the school, Relvao said “This is […]

Who are the many that saw this as a potential breakout season for him? I have legitimately never heard that before.

Normally I see no reason to criticize a player's decision to leave/transfer. But this one leaves me very ticked off. He couldn't figure this out earlier than 1 week before the season starts. Give me a break. What a waste.

Do we have an option to find a JUCO player we could peel off.

Or maybe from some foreign school.

Teaches us to recruit American.

Breakout in the sense that he's going from .8 pts and 1.6 rebs to something much higher than that, and with considerably much more playing time. I didn't mean it in the sense that he'd be a world-beater.

My concern is we had 10 fouls to give in the post, now only 5.
Exactly.. this isn't a hard concept to understand. I totally get that Relvao was going to end up playing back up minutes and that this is a guard oriented team, BUT those are now roughly 6-8 minutes a game we have to replace, and 5 less fouls at a position that is paper thin in terms of size and experience. The sky isn't falling; nowhere close to it, but one can't act like this doesn't matter at all.

there were better 6 foot 6 Pikes during IFC leagues. Paulsen should head to the RAC and go give two of them a jersey. They are better than Relvao.

My concern is with the stamina of a team with only 8 active players. We could very well start out strong but like last year, our young players ran out of gas about 2/3 through the season. I could envision some losses towards the end that could have been wins if we had a full compliment of players

Most teams only play 8-9 players as part of a regular rotation anyhow.

The impact of this is being seriously overstated for whatever reason.

Relvao wasn't a stat player and probably would have never started a single game even if he has stayed. But I think he would've been a key role player. I think he changed the momentum of last year's Penn State game. They were killing us offensively in the paint. Paulsen put in Relvao to match up against bigger Big10 forwards. He playing 18 minutes in that game. While not a huge loss, him leaving does hurt our team.

Probably because the only big guys we have now are a 6'8" freshman and two 6'7" wing guys who don't exactly have the bodies yet to defend the paint at the A10 level.

Nobody is saying Relvao was a stud, but like others said he could give you a handful of minutes, especially during games where foul trouble becomes a factor. We won't miss him every game, but there will be a handful of games this year when not having another big body option will hurt us.

I'm not sold on Calixte yet. It's not like he had major offers out of high school or an eye popping stat line (he averaged 14 points per game - meh). Maybe others got some inside info that he is tearing it up at practice - I don't know... but putting all of our eggs in his basket scares the crap out of me. I hope he can defend A10 bigs without getting in foul trouble, but that's a lot to ask of a freshman!

I was one of the few people who actually like Relvao's game. We have been fortunate enough to have some freshman ready to play, but the majority of freshman play like Relvao. Especially in the 5 spot. I know most point to his knees. But he seemed athletically fine to me. In my eyes he wasn't prepared mentally. I think all he needed was an off-season to self reflect and work on his hands/not drop the ball in the paint. I really thought he would be able to hold his own this season.

Calixte looks fine, but he is a freshman. and Freshman bigs tend to foul.

I'm not saying Calixte is going to set the world on fire, but what does it say about Relvao that he was behind Calixte on the depth chart in his third year in the program?

We already were going to be a perimeter-oriented team with Relvao. Now we just need Mar to step up and be ready to play real minutes right away.

Frankly the games we lose for lack of an additional big body are games we were going to lose anyhow.

The only thing I disagree with is the "lack of an additional big body are games we were going to lose anyhow". I think Relvao was good enough to be able to give us minutes as a stop gap to defend post players for a handful of minutes.

Not trying to be a smart a**, but what do you do when 8 minutes into a game Calixte just picked up his 2nd foul against a 6'8" true post player? Do you put Mar or AJ on them? Boyd? 3 scholarship forwards is hardly ideal, especially when 2 of them seem to be more wing types and not low post guys.
