"Mason has hosted several NCAA first- and second-round events on campus in its 50-year history but the only NCAA Championship other than the 1990 men's volleyball one was in women's soccer. In 1985, the Patriots claimed the national women's soccer title on its home turf at George Mason Stadium."

Dayton will continue to host the first four through 2020 and we get a volleyball championship....

http://www.offtheblockblog.com/2017/04/lbsu-george-mason-ohio-state-ucla-win-ncaa-tourney-bids/:

"George Mason was awarded its second all-time championship bid and first since the 1990 championship as it will play host to the 2020 NCAA Tournament on May 7-9, 2020 at EagleBank Arena. In addition, George Mason is the first East Coast school besides Penn State in more than two decades to be selected as a NCAA Tournament site.

'We are excited to bring the country’s best into our gym, and showcase the beauty of the D.C. metro area,' George Mason coach Jay Hosack said. 'It’s been over 25 years since Mason has hosted. We look forward to doing it again in 2020.'"

Can't you be happy for once? I know this screws up your plans to give the RAC over to the basketball team, but this is a good thing.

Our arena, a, isn't big enough to host an NCAA tournament, and, b, is right next to the Verizon Center, which would be the building that would host a tournament even if it were (like 2006's regional championships).

What is the average attendance for one of these things?

I don't know, but BYU has gotten over 10,000 fans for some of its matches. They average about 3,000 fans a game, so I would suspect that's probably around what we should expect.

The largest crowd ever (I think) for an NCAA tournament final was 9,809 UCLA vs. Pepperdine in 1984. That was held on UCLA's campus, so home crowd.

I think this is good exposure for the university. I could see some middle and high schools take advantage of this opportunity, and who knows, it may help recruiting in this sport (and women's volleyball for that matter).

Exposure! the average attendance is 3 thousand people. This is nothing to brag about.

How about the added motivation for Mason to win the 2020 EIVA championship and qualify for the NCAA championship held on campus?

This guy gets it!

Team was ranked preseason this year and was conference favorite but it took them until the last couple weeks of the season to find their groove so unfortunately they missed making the EIVA tournament (only top 4 qualify). I think the future is still bright for them though, and I think this combined with BE hiring Hosack show the schools commitment to making men's VB a NC caliber team.

So what you're saying is, is that Mason can make this the "Mason invitational", have home court advantage, have all the calls go for Mason and have the ushers be disrespectful to other teams fans.

This means EagleBank arena will still existing May 2020. I wonder if we see some arena enhancements between now and then.
