What are we good at?

So we have pretty much discussed to death and we all seem to be in agreement about the deficiencies of this team, so I keep trying to find positives and things we are good at but keep coming up empty. What positives has anyone seen? And I don't mean excuses like, well we were without Copes and Allen for some games, we lost Arledge, etc. While all legitimate issues, I'm looking for things the team currently does well, not reasons why we don't.

Marko has improved fantastically. Jenkins and Moore show a lot of promise. Sherrod is good at scoring. I think we actually have potential to be a good pressing team and maybe even a pretty good zone-ing team. But that's potential, not proven reality. A lot of individuals are good at a lot of things. But I bet you were looking at what we're good at as a team, and that's harder to answer, huh?

...We're good at getting injured.

Joe: Remind me how many games we lost when Allen was out?

We don't have anything to hang our hat on as a team, which is the big problem.

We're not a super-efficient offensive team. We're not a lockdown defensive team. We don't play fast or grind teams down.

I'm honestly not sure what kind of team we are -- other than mediocre.

We have proven to be very good at blowing large leads over the past few years. Not something you would want to brag about or hang your hat on, but that's about it.

Yeah, the phrase "You can never count them out." doesn't apply to GMU but to each of their opponents. Joe Shannon has posed a difficult question to answer.

Ok, let's see if I can pull something out here: We have a distinctive reputation. We're the only school in the country that people are talking about when they ask, "who's going to be the next George Mason?"

Unfortunately, they don't ask that question anymore.

Nobody wants to be the team that came out of nowhere to make the FF, then retreated back to obscurity.

It's a good thing that some of you guys weren't Indiana State fans, which lost in the 1979 NCAA championship game to Michigan State and didn't return to the NCAA tourney for 21 years (2000).

Indiana State had the benefit of superstar and was not the result of lesser talent operating as cohesive team whose whole is better then the sum of its parts. One is the result of years of program building and a clearly defined philosophy and the other from a generational talent. Take away any of the starting five and Mason was still an outstanding squad. Take away Bird and it's just another inconsequential team. A rather silly comparison.

So take away Jai Lewis or Will Thomas and start Chris Fleming or Sammy Hernandez and we still go to the NCAA tournament? I don't think so. You may be right about one of the starting backcourt, because we had long, athletic defensive stopper Gabe Norwood on the bench, but our two forwards were absolutely indispensible.

I don't see where I stated that.

We'd still have been good, but probably not a tourney team.

First you said that you could take away any of the starting five on the 2005-06 Final Four team and it would still have been an outstanding squad. Now, you're saying it would have been good, but probably not a tourney team.

What will you say next?

Plus the organization has completely changed since then. But those are the kind of memories that can be rekindled easily the moment a GMU team shows any signs of tournament-ready life.

Your childish semantics aside, the question is whether we'd have been a tournament team. Some very outstanding teams - by CAA standards at least - have not been tournament teams. But an excellent attempt at distracting from your ridiculous comparison to Indiana State.

Also it's "write" not "say."

I really didn't expect you to understand what I was saying about Indiana State. Nor, am I surprised by anything that you "write". Basically, the only thing that you are good at is being disrespectful to other posters. I hope that you are impressed with yourself!
