Chances Coach Hewitt will trash his stagnant 4 out 1 in motion offense?

The 4 out , 1 in motion offense seems to only work well if you have a roster filled with perimeter shooters/NBA talent. If you only have 1 or 2 shooters on the roster, scoring comes and goes. That pretty much the reason why Mason struggled even in a weak CAA conference in 2012-2013 and got beaten by Fordham TWICE in its inaugural A10 season.

Will Hewitt ever change his system to fit the talent level he currently has instead of the 4/5 star, nba talent in his imagination?

Anyone noticed any changes Hewitt made near the end of the season that suggests he has changed/tweaked his system a little?

I did vs first dusquene game. Why do you ask?

to answer your question if he was not a stubborn man he would change it and had he done it earlier he probably would have won a lot more games

I would argue you need shooters more with a double post offense.

More of a weakness I think is the lack of taller guards that can attack the rim and defend.

Don't think Hewitt goes with a completely new offense especially when his back is to the wall.

Im mixed on it, but not sure a double post offense would bring better results when Im not even sure we have one legit consistent post threat.

Not sure any new offense really vastly improves things next year.

next year the program has its lowest expectations since early 90's. it might be a chance for hewitt to experiment in coaching something different. however, i'm pretty sure he isn't going to do any experimenting as jollay pointed out.

we can argue the system used till we're blue in the face. but hewitt has no leg to stand on when it comes to implementing a system with faulty parts. i don't care what system we use, just have the right players and put them in a position to be their best.

We definitely had flaws in our offensive attack, but I'm fairly certain it's not the main reason we lost 20 games. We shot a decent percentage (implying we were able to get decent looks), didn't turn it over a ton (especially while going with a freshman PG) and put up decent point totals.

The true question is what are we going to change defensively. Our constant switching, inability to stay in front of anyone and lack of a rim protector made us easier to score on than (insert celebrity whore here).

The one substantive offensive change we can make is to run more and try to get easy baskets -- either going to the basket or our few shooters running to spots for open transition 3s.

I'm not advocating anything as ridiculous as Westhead's system, but I have a feeling that the less time we spend trying to run offense against a set defense in the halfcourt, the better off we'll be.

Hewitt has made it a point of emphasis to try and run more, based in what I have heard.

Not sure why we really haven't, guess it goes to the whole PG issue. Again.

Still, Holloway and any "point forward" type that we may or may not have on the roster next year should be able to facilitate a better transition game.

Agree though, if there's no defensive improvement I don't think much else will even matter.

A good defense can result in easy baskets in transition. Why don't we run more? We can't, because we can't stop anyone.

His offense got him to a NC game and a contract of historical legend, and hen fired, he got another good gig and contract.

I would say his offense is serving him just fine.....

Our offensive numbers aren't really that bad. I'd say we were actually oddly a good three point shooting team that didn't take enough 3s (that's partly Sherrod's fault, I think, for ending his career on such a horrible 3-point shooting slump).

The team's biggest problems are:

1) Man to man defense: I mean it is laughably bad. And given Allen, Sherrod and Moore's athleticism should not have been nearly as bad as it was.

2) Rebounding -- our bigs are too soft, our guards decided that boxing out was for squares.

3) Generating turnovers -- the press is a sieve, our players don't anticipate, can't jump passing lanes etc. We had to have been one of the worst teams in division 1 at disrupting the other team's offense.

4) Fouling -- my god can there be a more undisciplined team? (which brings me to number 5)

5) Unforced errors -- same as number 4. So many momentum killing, stupid mistakes

We're going to struggle on offense no matter, given the players Hewitt has to work with next season. The five areas I mentioned above need to be the focus of improvement.

I'll go with defense. How many times did we see a hot shot guard drive into the paint for a quick lay-up or short J? How many times did we see one of our forwards getting caught flatfooted outside the key guarding one-on-on? How many times were players out of position to box out or even jump for a rebound?

Second and third chance scoring killed us. Easy three-point looks killed us. Lack of defensive rebounds at key moments killed us. Quicker, driving little guards killed us. D-E-F-E-N-S-E!

I agree with the defense first people. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has absolutely no faith Hewitt has the ability to bring about significant improvement in this area. Let's just get next year's 7-24 season out of the way so we can hire a guy who can.

When I think of defense and hewitt.... I think of 32-4. I think of Kennesaw State. If anything, next year we could see the return of the 'Run N Gun'.

IMO, 32-4 was the lowest point in GMU basketball history. We didn't have expectations during the Westhead/Nestor years. I just remember sitting in the crowd thinking that in less than a year we went from beating Villanova in the first round in the NCAAT to being absolutely obliterated. Perhaps there are lower points, but considering we had the conference POY and were coming off a 27 win season I can't think of a lower time.

Theres no other way to say it. HEWITT HAS KILLED THE PROGRAM. Maybe we can market it that way.
