As the national conversation continues to be focused on NCAA issues regarding compensation and benefits for athletes at member schools, Maryland announced a major change on Tuesday morning.
The university will begin offering multi-year scholarship guarantees to incoming athletes in all sports beginning in November of this year. It is part of a larger initiative that the school has called ‘The Maryland Way Guarantee’.
As the school explains it, athletes in all sports will now be guaranteed a scholarship even if their eligibility is exhausted before graduation. At the same time, if injury prevents the athlete from competing, his or her scholarship will be guaranteed until degree completion.
The change covers athletes who leave the university in good academic standing, as well. If he or she returns to the school to finish a degree, tuition, books, and fees will be covered.
