"Mason Edged by Old Dominion Despite Moore’s 22 Points" by Brian Wright

Another miracle was simply too much to ask. Any possibility of a recurrence from what took place on Saturday night fell by the wayside for George Mason in the waning moments against former CAA foe Old Dominion. This time, it was a pair of opposing three-pointers (from much closer range) that spelled Patriot defeat in […]

The article indicated the difference in the game (3 pt. shooting and offensive board conversion). This was not the ODU of a few years back. This team could really shoot (particularly when left open). They also made their free throws. All that aside, I thought this was one of our best games to date. I was worried that we wouldn't play with the intensity deserved from a former rival but thought our effort was good. Trey Porter needs more playing time--he made an immediate difference off the bench. Although Copes stats looked pretty good, how could he give up a technical foul on a play where he gets fouled and earns 2 free throws? He is a senior and this should never happen.

Marquise and Patrick penetrated at will during the game. I honestly thought we took too many 3's. Also, long offensive rebounds killed us. I think the team has relied too much on Thompson to pull down the boards but rebounding must be everyone's business. We had too few assists, but balanced that with fewer turnovers. I liked that we showed zone but felt we used it too frequently. Finally, it amazed me how we could continue to leave their same outside shooter open throughout the game and not be able to adjust. Some of that is on the coaches, some attributed to good ball movement by ODU, but we also need to do a better job of fighting over the screens.

All-in-all the game was entertaining and the ODU fans were even well-behaved. It was another loss but I left the game thinking that we are a better team than they were against the Ivy's to start the season.
