We won the first meeting of the year 86-80 at EBA on January 10th. Riley Allenspach (16), Fatt Hill (16), Kory Mincy (15), Jahari Long (14), and Masai Troutman (13) all scored in double figures in what was one of our most efficient games of the year offensively. We shot 56.4% from the floor and 87.5% from the free throw line. We only committed 7 turnovers. Five rams scored in double figures led by Lazar Djokovic with 23. In short, it was as good a performance as possible.

Thoughts: It took an outstanding offensive performance to win the first meeting of the year at home. It will take an all-around effort to win in Richmond. We last won at Siegel Center on 2/20/21.

It’s Senior Night for the rams where they get their 4 year coloring books as tokens of academic prowess. We’ve ruined it before and it sure would be nice to do so again but my confidence is not high.

Discuss.

Play defense and we’ve got a chance. Keep it within five until the final five minutes and hope a few shots drop. Go back into lazy defense and it turns into a blowout.

I wouldn’t bet on a win, but I’d never completely count Tony out, either. That four-game skid was brutal, but Skinn got them back on track. With the injuries, I’m not sure we have enough to go toe-to-toe but if vcu has an off night, maybe we can steal one. 15-20% sounds about right. kalshi has it at 13% so it fits.

Getting back to tonight's game: I think most of us had this as a road loss even when we were playing our best ball and Mincy was healthy, and the loss of Fatt now makes the task even more daunting. vcu doesn't press like they used to, but their on-ball pressure can still force turnovers, steals and unforced errors against very good guards.

Who is going to fill that void tonight to help Long and Mincy? Presley and Troutman are average-at-best ballhandlers, and Booker is still adapting to the speed of the college game. vcu's defensive gameplan will surely focus on stopping Mincy and Riley from beating them, so other players like Long, Troutman, Adebayo and Stas need to step up.

I also think this is a good opportunity for Ellington, because he is more polished offensively at this point than Kanga (who can still contribute with rebounding and some hard fouls). I'm not saying we can win this game, but we can at least give ourselves a chance by protecting the ball, rebounding, and getting scoring contributions from everybody.

Couple of those vcu players are free and easy with the arm bars. I think we had to return the favor.
