Welcome Coach Tony Skinn!

Trilly Donovan: "At the end of last season, Skinn passed on a few high major opportunities and signed a contract extension with George Mason through the 2030 season. Despite that show of good faith, his buyout still sits at a relatively low $1.2M, leaving the door open for a top program to swoop in."

Allow me to finish the quote: "Skinn's trajectory is on a much better path than his predecessor."

Brand new Bleacher Report article on Tony Skinn and the GMU 2006 Final Four run:

Look at this quote at the end:

"Knowing that the head coach was somebody who played on that team and has been to that level of somewhere where I'm striving to be, it definitely gave me that extra edge to want to come here," Mincy said. "I feel like with B.O. coming back, we win the A-10 and we're one of the most dangerous teams in March Madness. Just want everybody to watch out."

"Yeah, we got to beat Skinn," O'Connor said. "We got to get them to stop talking about 2006. Start talking about 2025-26."

I listened to the coach's show above.

I was expecting the coach to be disappointed by the teams level of effort and intensity on both ends during the tech game.

Instead, Tony acts like it's okay and said "we were playing with house money" anyway. He went on to say the look..Mason outscored Tech in the second half..like that's a consolation prize. Of course, he neglected to mention the fact that Tech extended the lead to 20 points with 10 minutes to go..and the final score didn't indicate the extent of the blowout.

If Tony and Mason came into Tech game with the "we're lucky to be here" attitude then the Patriots lost the game before it began.

Unfortunately, half wins don't count

If that's really the attitude then I guess they are a middle of the pack A10 team. However I don't think he was ok with losing. I think there's 2 ways to this, you can be Kim English and bash and blame every single thing on your players every game. Or you can have a positive attitude and look at it and move on from a loss. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt here and say he will never bash his team in public and that's ok. What he says to them in the locker room is a lot more important than what he tells the public anyway.

Skinn tends to say these things when he’s not concerned about the overall tendencies of the team.

For instance, last season Darius Maddox had a tough stretch of shooting and Tony constantly said he wasn’t worried about it, and he was right.

Yes. I fully trust Tony to say the right thing at the right time. I don't for a minute believe he was saying, "Win or lose, we're just happy to be invited to play these guys."

Unless we got millions to go play vt, I dunno what "house money" TS is referring to. Anytime you have a chance to add a brick to the "Gonzaga of the East" type program you want to build here, then 100% should be pissed that brick is now shattered. Bad take by TS.

My take on it was: we were lucky to be 9-0 given the injuries we had to start the season (house money comment, because he references the injuries during the same breath).

Then he talks about Presley missing the front end of a one-and-one and back-to-back turnovers turning what “should have been a 2 point halftime game into a 13 point deficit,” which to me sounds like he wants to clean up those mistakes.

He also mentioned the team not playing with enough teeth on defense still.

So I would say overall he wasn’t happy with how the game went but he also saw some correctable things that could turn a game like that from a loss into a win down the stretch, so he’s not overly concerned with the overall effort of the team or what it’s capable of.

I would have to disagree with Skinn's take on his own team .

Per Grok:

**Through their first 9 games of the 2025-26 season (all wins, entering the December 6 game vs. Virginia Tech), George Mason men's basketball had an average margin of victory (scoring margin) of +17.7 points per game.**

This is calculated from cumulative totals of 739 points scored and 580 points allowed over those 9 games (159 total margin / 9 = +17.7).

No exact national ranking for scoring margin through precisely those 9 games is explicitly documented in previews or stats leaders from early December 2025. However, based on available early-season data and comparable undefeated/mid-major teams, this +17.7 margin likely placed them in the top 50-80 nationally (e.g., similar to a reported tie for 77th at +17.8 after an earlier point in the season with fewer games). Top leaders at that time typically exceeded +22 to +25 for the top 10-20 spots. George Mason was prominently ranked in other categories, such as 4th nationally in 3-point percentage (.419).' .

You are dominating teams if you are beating opponents by almost 18 ppg.

There is no reason for this team to feel it should be lucky to be on the same court with the hokies.

After all Charlotte(#197) took the hokies to the ropes in Cassell before Thanksgiving

Brand new very in-depth article on Tony Skinn:

Check this part out:

Skinn says George Mason “essentially” raised him and that he would be top 10 if there was a metric that measured the college basketball coaches happiest with their situations.
