GIVING DAY 2023
@HoopsAdmin

as a basketball fan and a non GMU alumni- i am not "Jumping with Joy" over our OOC schedule.
I'd much rather see us play a 13 game OOC schedule consisting of Duke, Kentucky, UCLA, Maryland, Georgetown, Houston, Michigan, Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Gonzaga, Stanford and Penn - all at Eagle Bank, But that will only happen in my dreams.

Of the current OOC schedule i have tentative plans to see these games - depending upon other conflicts and i am eagerly waith for the last 4 games to be announced.

But I do understand how these are good games for GMU because of the historical ties and rivalries from the CAA days, the high levels of attendance both these home and away games generate. Hopefully the University will sponsor a few buses so that GMU fans and students can attend these games on the road.

But I hope that in 3-5 years we are playing Virginia and Virginia Tech on an extended home/home basis with sellouts both home and away and maybe even Liberty for the bragging rights of the best team in Virginia.

my version of this is

Schedule the OOC best you can until you can OOC schedule better.
Then when you can schedule OOC better, schedule OOC better.

We all have high hopes and see great potential in a Kim English-led GMU team, but he needs time to reach and match those expectations.

like many of you, I am hoping that that step occurs this season

Why are you tagging @HoopsAdmin ? He doesn't make the schedule.

If attendance at these shitty old CAA games isn’t any better can we finally drop the argument that we do it to put butts in seats? I totally get the nostalgia factor, but it’s been a decade since we were in the league, if there is no tangible reason to keep playing these games (increased fan attendance, NET boost, etc) then when are we going to stop doing it. I know a bunch of you guys are all balls horny for it, but your average fan in NOVA is not beating down the door to see a Hofstra game. Your average fan in NOVA doesn’t know who Hofstra is, or that they are in fact a college.

I don’t think anyone was arguing that outside of ODU, JMU and maybe W&W that any old CAA team is going to put butts in the seats. Hofstra isn’t a bad game, though. They are a solid mid-major program.

I’m not sure what you expect out of a guarantee game. If you aren’t excited to see George Mason play you aren’t going to be excited about any team they pay to come to EBA. The end goal is to have a program where 6-7k people show up even for a Hofstra or a UMES because they want to see their team play, not the other one.

By the way, Kim English talked about the mystery AAC team again in the last podcast, a game in Chicago. What AAC team would want to play a game in Chicago? I didn’t mishear that did I?

No, you did not. Maybe the opposing coach wants to recruit that area. I expect we'll get an announcement soon. Kim has been teasing that game for a while.

He tagged me because I disliked his post about ODU. Like many, I feel ODU is of no use to us. They are a bad loss if we lose, and of no value if we win.

I agree playing ODU and JMU on the road isn’t really beneficial to us anymore. I’d prefer we’d lean into the A10 rivalries more (vcu, GW, Richmond) than try to hold on to CAA ones.

However, we cannot end these rivalries on losses.

Based on the attendance figures the average fan in NOVA isn’t coming to Mason games anyhow.

Our fan base is just flat out lame. Always has been and will most likely remain so in the near and distant future. All time record of barely over .500 (806 - 778) has done little to inspire anyone. Generations of fans were subjected to pathetic to average at best teams, see Linn, Westhead, Nestor, Hewitt, and Paulsen. No history of success means people have found other things to do with their time and money. Add to that we've screwed the past 11 years post Coach L. I remain hopeful that KE will break the mold but I am not confident that we'll "sell out" on a regular basis even with the official capacity being lowered to around 7,500. I'm not going to put any money down on a crowd of 6,000. If Duke and Kentucky came to EBA 3/4 of the crowd would root for them. In the meantime I will continue to attend ALL home games, some away games, and enjoy the company of the few rabid Mason fans that exist in Fairfax.
